From Devastation to Gratitude

“Compulsive and emotional eating can make life bleak and lonely, and many of us are unable to envision any other way of life.  We may realize the devastation but have no faith for taking action.  Al around us there are people living in this land of despair.
But take heart!  The Lord, as our ever-present guide, has allowed us to see into another realm-one with the opportunity for life apart from devastation.  No longer controlled by food obsessions or defined by our weight, gratitude compels us to carry out His will and bring hope to the many others who still suffer.  We have compassion for them, not judgement, because we once lived where they live now, and we recognize how easily we could live there again if we kept a cavalier attitude.

Today, Lord, may I remember the devastation of compulsive and emotional eating.  May I remember the grace You’ve shown me in my effort to overcome my problem.  Build my compassion for those who will suffer.” A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.  - Psalms 91:7  This devotion is from Lose It For Life Day By Day by Steve Arterburn.

Real Nourishment

“For many of us, daily living is so cumbersome that it completely drains our energy.  We feel tired and trapped by our many obligations.  So much so that it is often all we can do to just “maintain” the “minimum.”  How can we even think about applying ourselves toward fitness goals when we are starved for hope in every other area?  There are so many things we “should” and “shouldn’t” be doing, but we are simply too tired to face any of them.  So we eat.

In our dissatisfaction, we turn to food to provide the flavor–the spice in life that we are missing. Our food is always available and pleasing when emptiness presents itself.
When Jesus says in this verse, though is intriguing: ‘My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.’ He gives us valuable insight for gaining the fulfilled life.  It is not extra food or snacks that will replenish our energy or provide us with flavor.  Real nourishment comes for living in the center of God’s will for us

By devoting even a few moments per week to using our spiritual gifts and talents, we will find new joy in our created purpose.  Carrying out God’s plan for us bring a surprising amount of energy, and our cup becomes full and then runs over…

Today, Lord, please show me a piece of Your created purpose in me.  May I spend a few moments applying myself toward Your call on my life and finding new energy for the tasks at hand. My food, said Jesus, is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.”-John 4:34  Quote from Lose It For Life Day by Day by Stephen Arterburn.

Grace for All Stages

“A young girl, after spending the night at a friend’s house nearby ran home to tell her mother some great news: ‘Mom!  Mom!  Guess what?  I know who the Tooth Fairy is!’  Surprised and shocked by her daughter’s announcement, the mother eagerly asked, ‘Who is it?’  The young girl replied, ‘It’s Mrs. Putt!’

Coming to grips with reality often happens in stage, Like the darling child in this story, we, too are unlocking life’s mysteries in phases.  After years of feeding our worldly desires for food, we now seek understanding for healthier living.  It involved unlearning falsehood and finding truth for taking godly, sensible action in the present age.  As we gradually absorb new insight, we can embrace God’s grace for where we are today.  This is a process that we can rejoice in.

Today, Lord, may I take another step toward godliness and wisdom with food.  I receive Your grace today. For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously, and godly in the present age- Titus 2:11-12”
