Dr. John Townsend

Dr. Townsend, clinical psychologist and marriage and family therapist, is an engaging and informative speaker. He has helped countless people in many arenas of life, with his unique blend of wisdom, humor, care and spirituality. His live conferences impart practical relationship skills. These motivational events are uniquely marked by his ability to connect in a very personal way with the conference attendees.

A prolific writer, Dr. Townsend has authored or co-authored many books, selling over 4 million copies, including the million-seller Boundaries, and most recently “Who’s Pushing Your Buttons”, “Rescue Your Love Life” and “Boundaries with Teens.” He has been awarded three Gold Medallion awards, as well as the Retailers Choice award for “God Will Make a Way,” a book and television partnership with Time-Life and Integrity Publishers.

Dr. Townsend co-hosts the nationally syndicated radio program New Life Live, which broadcasts in over 150 markets. He has appeared often on other radio and television broadcasts, including FOX News.

Dr. Townsend co-founded Cloud-Townsend Resources, which produces and resources his speaking events. He speaks nationally on such issues as relationships, personal growth, family, marriage, parenting, spirituality and dating.

A special interest of Dr. Townsend’s is international travel and he is able to frequently combine his personal interest with ministry and speaking opportunities. He has conducted seminars in countries such as China, India, Japan, Russia, Ukraine, Kenya, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Canada and Sweden

In addition, Dr. Townsend also co-founded and directed a health-care company which operated treatment centers in thirty-five Western US cities, serving as Clinical Co-Director for ten years. His clinical and research experience help serve as the background for his many ideas and tips on personal growth and problem-solving with his audiences today.

Growing up in North Carolina, Dr. Townsend spent many years actively participating in the boy scouts, rising to the rank of Eagle Scout. He earned his B.A. in psychology at North Carolina State University with honors. He then received his Master of Theology degree with honors at Dallas Theological Seminary, and completed his Masters and Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Biola University.

Dr. Townsend serves on the Board of Mustard Seed Ranch, a unique, faith-focused program that uses a ranch setting to assist those in need. He also serves on the Board of Advisors of two other ministries, India Gospel League, which supports the needy in India, and Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS), a ministry for moms.

He served as president of the Christian Association for Psychological Studies (Western Division) and is a frequent guest instructor for the Graduate Medical Education Curriculum Program at Loma Linda Medical School.

Dr. Townsend along with his wife and sons live in Southern California. He is a music lover and in fact has been playing locally in a band for the past several years!
