Spiritual Disciplines

Excerpted from the book Transformation by Steve Arterburn

Spiritual disciplines are the practices that protect our
faith. Paul described them in his first letter to Timothy: ‘Spend your time and
energy in training yourself for spiritual fitness. Physical exercise has some
value, but spiritual exercise is much more important, for it promises a reward
in both this life and the next’ (1 Timothy 4:7-8).

Spiritual disciplines fall into
two general categories: abstaining from and adding to.

The following list provides some
examples.

Putting On

Prayer

Study/Meditation

Worship

Fasting

Service

Spiritual Friendship

Putting Off

Giving/Stewardship

Solitude

Fasting

Confession

Silence

This list is not exhaustive. These
are simply some of the more common ones. A scriptural study of each one will
bring into focus a clear picture of how to exercise them.

The practice of spiritual
disciplines will change our hearts, our minds, and our lives. It also will make
us more effective in ministering to others and thereby continuing the process
of redemption, both in our own lives and in the lives of those whom God sends
us.
