Finding Reasons to Give Thanks

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.” — Proverbs 17:22 (NLT)

What if gratitude isn’t about having more to be thankful for, but learning to recognize what you already have?

It’s easy to give thanks when life is going well. But what about when life hurts, and you’re tempted to let it break your spirit?

When prayers seem unanswered, relationships fall apart, or the future feels uncertain, giving thanks can feel impossible.

Yet gratitude isn’t just a response to good circumstances. It’s a way of recognizing God’s goodness even when life is difficult.

Proverbs 17:22 reminds us that a cheerful heart is good medicine. Gratitude can’t erase our pain, but it can help us notice blessings we might otherwise overlook.

We can become so focused on what’s missing that we overlook what we have. We dwell on the problem instead of noticing the person who stood beside us. We worry about tomorrow instead of recognizing God’s faithfulness today.

Gratitude changes what we notice.

It doesn’t mean ignoring pain or pretending everything is fine. It means making room for thankfulness alongside our struggles.

Maybe you’re thankful for a friend who listens without judgment. Maybe you’re grateful for the strength to get through another difficult day. Or maybe you simply need to pause and remember that God has not abandoned you.

You don’t need a perfect life to have a thankful heart.

Today’s Challenge: Before you get out of bed, tell God three things you’re thankful for. Look beyond the obvious blessings and consider the people, moments, and reminders of God’s faithfulness that you might otherwise overlook. And continue the habit of thanking God for three things in the morning before you even get up.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, forgive me for focusing so much on what is wrong that I forget Your goodness. Open my eyes to the blessings around me, even in difficult seasons. Help me cultivate a grateful heart and remember Your faithfulness in every circumstance. In Jesus’ name, amen.
