The Thankfulness Challenge

“I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.” — Psalm 7:17 (NIV)

What if the secret to a better Thanksgiving isn’t having more, but appreciating what you already have?

It’s easy to focus on what’s missing. Maybe you wish you had a better job, a closer family, more money, or a different set of circumstances. When we spend our time comparing our lives with others, we can overlook the blessings right in front of us.

Entitlement says, “I deserve more.” Gratitude says, “I’m thankful for what I’ve been given.”

The difference matters.

When we believe we’re entitled to something, we can start treating our blessings as if they’re owed to us. We stop appreciating what we have because we’re too busy thinking about what we want.

But gratitude shifts our perspective. Instead of taking our blessings for granted, we recognize them as gifts from God.

Think about the simple things you might overlook today. Your car started this morning. Someone checked in on you. You had food to eat, a place to sleep, or a friend who listened when you needed to talk.

These may not seem like extraordinary blessings, but they’re worth appreciating.

In a message called “Thank Therapy,” New Life LIVE co-host Dr. Jim Burns shared a practice of thanking God for twenty things each day. Some were significant, while others were as simple as having a car that started.

Imagine how your perspective might change if you regularly looked for twenty reasons to give thanks.

This Thanksgiving, you don’t have to wait until everything is perfect to practice gratitude. You can thank God for His provision, His faithfulness, and the people He has placed in your life.

And gratitude doesn’t have to stop with you. When you recognize someone’s kindness, tell them. When you appreciate a friend or family member, let them know. A thankful heart looks for opportunities to share the good it has received.

The more you practice gratitude, the less room you leave for entitlement and resentment.

Today’s Challenge: Try your own version of “Thank Therapy.” Write down twenty things you’re thankful for today. Include the big blessings and the little ones. Then choose one person on your list and tell them why you’re grateful for them.

You might discover that the blessings you’ve been overlooking are the very things that make this Thanksgiving meaningful.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I’ve taken Your blessings for granted. Open my eyes to the good You have placed in my life. Help me replace entitlement with gratitude and share Your goodness with the people around me. Teach me to live with a thankful heart, not just at Thanksgiving, but every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
