When the Future Feels Uncertain

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” – Jeremiah 29:11, NLT

If anything is certain, it is this: the future is uncertain.

We can make plans, set goals, prepare for tomorrow, and do everything we can to feel in control. But none of us knows exactly what the next day will bring.

Sometimes uncertainty is exciting. Other times, it is frightening.

You may be wondering whether you’ll lose your job, what a doctor’s report will reveal, whether your marriage will survive, how your children will turn out, or how you will move forward after losing someone you love.

When we don’t know what is ahead, it’s easy to become consumed by what ifs.

What if something goes wrong?
What if I can’t handle it?
What if things never get better?

We often want God to show us exactly what is coming so we can prepare. But God doesn’t always give us a glimpse of tomorrow. Instead, He invites us to trust Him today.

Because while the future is uncertain to us, it is not uncertain to God.

God is already there.

Before you experience tomorrow, God is present there. Before you receive the news, face the change, walk through the loss, or make the difficult decision, God knows what is coming. Nothing will surprise Him.

That doesn’t mean everything that happens will be easy. Scripture never promises that we will avoid hardship, disappointment, or grief. But it does promise that God will be with us through whatever we face.

Sometimes trusting God means surrendering our need to know.

You don’t have to know what tomorrow holds to trust the God who does.

You can make wise decisions, seek godly counsel, and prepare when you can while still releasing the outcome to God.

As Becky Brown, president of New Life, says, “Life be life-ing! Sometimes the thing that we didn’t expect to happen, happens. But we have a hope that never fails.”

When the unexpected happens, God will still be there. He will meet you in the uncertainty and give you strength for what is in front of you.

So what do you need to trust and surrender to God today?

You may not know what tomorrow holds. But you can trust God today.

The future may be uncertain, but God is not.

Prayer:
God, I don’t know what the future holds, but I know You hold the future. Help me surrender what I cannot control and trust You with what I cannot see. Remind me that You are with me today and will be with me tomorrow. Amen.
