“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 (ESV)
Some days, you don’t need another solution. You don’t need to accomplish one more thing. You simply need to stop.
Jesus knew that. That’s why His invitation isn’t, “Try harder.” It’s “Come to me.”
We live in a world that constantly tells us to do more, be more, and keep up. Even good things can leave us exhausted when we never give ourselves permission to pause. We can become so focused on caring for everyone else that we forget our own souls need care, too.
Jesus offers something the world cannot: rest.
The story of Martha and Mary gives us a beautiful picture of this. Martha was busy preparing and serving while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet. Martha was doing something good, but in the process, she became anxious and distracted.
Jesus wasn’t criticizing her desire to serve. He was reminding her that being with Him mattered more than getting everything done.
Maybe that’s something you need to hear today.
You don’t have to finish everything before you can come to Jesus. You don’t have to get your life under control before you sit at His feet. You don’t have to earn rest by completing your to-do list.
Come to Him tired. Come to Him overwhelmed. Come to Him just as you are.
Rest is an act of trust. When we stop, we acknowledge that the world doesn’t depend on us. The unfinished work can wait. The unanswered message can wait. Tomorrow will bring its own responsibilities.
For today, Jesus is inviting you to come.
Take a few quiet moments. Put down what you’ve been carrying and tell Him what is weighing on your heart.
Then simply breathe and remember:
You are not responsible for everything.
You are not defined by everything you accomplish.
And you don’t have to carry it all alone.
Jesus says, “Come to me.”
And He promises, “I will give you rest.”
Prayer:
Jesus, I am tired. I bring You the responsibilities, worries, and expectations I’ve been carrying. Help me release what was never mine to carry. Teach me to slow down, trust You, and find rest in Your presence. Amen.
