Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. — Psalm 103:2 (ESV)
We are often drawn to the extraordinary. We admire breathtaking places, impressive buildings, great accomplishments, and things that seem worthy of being called a “wonder.”
But some of God’s greatest gifts are so familiar that we barely notice them.
There is a story about a teacher who asked her students to name the Seven Wonders of the World. While the other students listed famous landmarks, one quiet girl struggled to make her list. When she finally shared her answers, they were much simpler: the ability to see, hear, touch, taste, feel, laugh, and love.
Her list is a reminder that wonder isn’t always found in spectacular places. Sometimes it is found in the ordinary gifts we experience every day.
When was the last time you stopped to thank God that you can hear a loved one’s voice, enjoy a meal, laugh with a friend, or experience the love of another person?
James 1:17 tells us that every good and perfect gift comes from above. What we often consider ordinary can actually be evidence of God’s extraordinary goodness.
And God’s wonders go even deeper. A changed life, freedom from addiction, reconciliation in a broken relationship, courage to face the past, forgiveness, peace, and renewed hope are all reminders of what God can do.
Today, don’t rush past the gifts that surround you. Take a few moments to notice them. Thank God for the people, experiences, abilities, and blessings you might normally take for granted.
The world may have its list of wonders, but God’s goodness cannot be contained on a list.
What is one ordinary gift in your life that you can thank God for today?
